"Niagara On The Road" Program
Posted February 01, 2012 9:00PM
During last year’s DE Committee meeting, we kicked around the idea of starting the “Niagara on the Road Program.” The premise for the idea is simple. We wanted to offer and encourage our DE participants (students and Instructors) to try a different track venue aside from Watkins Glen International, our home track.
Though many drivers express the desire to try a different track, there are many barriers that might discourage anyone from doing so. First, it’s intimidating to go to a different venue, not knowing the sponsoring organization, not knowing anyone else during the DE, and not being quite comfortable that they can tackle a new track, etc. There are social, logistical, technical and learning barriers that all considered, can and a lot of times dampen a participants’ enthusiasm.
Our program is designed to mitigate those concerns by having Niagara make arrangements with an established Club already doing a DE at different venues that we plan on bringing 10-15 drivers to their event. Our participants would sign up directly with those “partner” organizations, thereby alleviating any exposure on Niagara’s side. Once signed up, we as a region would help coordinate plans to “caravan” for the trip down and back. Knowing that your track buddies are doing the same “away” event makes for more fun all around in addition to having a support network to depend on should something go awry along the trip.
Once at the event, our participants can take comfort that there will be people they already know to interact with and share their respective discoveries about the “new” track. For good measure, they can also expect to experience a lot of the Niagara hospitality and camaraderie that they are all too familiar with at our own “home” events.
From a learning perspective, it allows our participants to practice skills they’ve learned at Watkins Glen and apply those same skills at a different venue and offer them a different set of challenges in learning the particulars of a different venue.
We believe that all of this would provide a “support base” of fellow drivers, reduced intimidation factors, mechanical support and even a trailer should the need arise.
We’re pleased to announce that as of April 10-11th, about 15 of us are committed to visiting VIR and kick off our inaugural Road Trip! We will be participating with David Murry Track Days for a two day event at one of the premier road courses in the country. This first ever Niagara Road Trip is limited to advanced drivers and instructors only, but we are working on another road trip August 17-19 time frame that would be open to all our run groups. We are targeting Mid-Ohio, which is another “must-do” track in conjunction with the Mid-Ohio Region PCA.
In the near term, we are hoping to do two road trips per year visiting other tracks. For subsequent years, we have in mind to visit Mosport, Shannonville, Mt. Tremblant, Calabogie, Lime Rock and Road America, amongst others. Stay tuned and happy motoring!
Onward,
Rich de Asis

2012 Required SFI 38.1 Recertification
Posted November 15, 2011 4:00PM
Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, Head and Neck Restraints must be recertified every five years. This means that during 2012, competitors using a HANS Device with a date of original certification in 2006 or earlier must have their device recertified. Those who have a HANS Device with a date of original certification in 2007, must be recertified according to the month on the SFI sticker. For example, a device with an original certification of June 2007 would expire in June 2012.
The procedure outlined by SFI states, in part, “Inspection must be done by the original manufacturer only, and not their authorized resellers or dealers.” Devices passing the inspection will receive a new SFI 38.1 conformance label marked with the inspection date.
• Competitors may use an FIA certified Head and Neck Restraint at an FIA event in the U.S. without meeting the SFI’s recertification requirement. But events not on the FIA sporting calendar and held in the U.S. will require an SFI 38.1 sticker for any device 5 years or older.
• Tethers for the HANS Device are manufactured from polyester, which gives them a longer span of use when compared to other material such as nylon.
Competitors should inspect their HANS Device and tethers after any impact where the device comes into use. It’s likely that the tethers should be replaced.

Tour to Dansville Balloon Festival
Posted August 10, 2011 5:00PM
Saturday, September 3, 2011
NRPCA members will meet at Lowes, 2350 Marketplace Dr, Rochester, NY, next to route 390 at 11:30am. This event is weather dependent. Hot air balloons do not launch in bad weather so if it is raining or windy or lightning we won’t be going. Watch for a same day e-mail saying if we are a GO or NO GO.
We will leave at noon for a fun, scenic ride to Dansville. I expect us to arrive at the airport ~1:30pm. Our cars will be on display from 1:30 on the runway tarmac until about 4:30. We will move our cars at 4:30 to an alternate location to make room for the crowds expected as part of the balloon launch. We leave the airport after the balloon launch.
Balloon launch will be ~6:00pm weather dependent (see above). I am arranging for the Porsche club to help with the launch of a hot air balloon.
Tom and Babs will be setting up a tarp for a shady place to relax and we expect to have some beverages available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cold drinks (it can be VERY hot on the run way), shade, sun screen, chairs, cameras, munchies (food is available on site too), proper clothes (be prepared for hot or cold or rain), portable car doll up material as there is no car wash on site.
Anyone on the fence about attending this event should check out previous year’s Dansville Balloon Festival pictures on the club web page.
Contact: Tom and Babs Lyons for more information.
Niagara takes FIRST PLACE in website competition!
Posted August 04, 2011 7:00AM
Niagara Region takes 1st place in class in the National PCA Website Competition! That is two years in a row! Award presented Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the Porsche Parade in Savannah, Georgia.
Congrats Niagara Region Members!
Posted August 03, 2011 4:00PM
You are a member of the PCA Runner-Up 2010 Region of the Year! This prestigious award sponsored by the Porsche factory and Porsche Cars North America was presented to Niagara Region on Tuesday, August 2, at the 2011 Porsche Parade in Savannah, Georgia.
The selection of the award winning region is based on level of activity, membership growth, community activity, multi-region participation, and newsletter and website effectiveness. While we won the runner-up award, I am convinced that out of the 139 PCA regions there is no group of PCA’ers more deserving than those in Niagara Region.
This recognition from PCA is a major accomplishment for our club and its members. Your enthusiasm, dedication to our region and the Porsche marque, and camaraderie are what make the Niagara Region what it is. Porsche has brought us together, but the members of our region are what keep us together. You should be very proud of your membership affiliation with such a club.
Congratulations and Happy Motoring!

WATKINS GLEN, NY – Watkins Glen International is proud to announce that the upcoming Mobil 1 Car Swap at The Glen on Tuesday, June 14, will be open to all spectators. Admission and parking will both be free for fans of all ages and there will be numerous locations for fans to watch NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star Tony Stewart and Formula 1™ World Champion Lewis Hamilton take laps in their own and then each others’ cars during the event.

“It has been our goal from the beginning to make this historic event open to our tens of thousands of fans and we are thrilled to make this announcement,” said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International. “There has been no question as to how badly our fans want to attend the Mobil 1 Car Swap at The Glen. They have overwhelmed us with their emails, phone calls, and comments through social media and it is this incredible passion that makes our fans the best in motorsports.”
Beginning at 11:00 a.m., fans will witness Hamilton take laps in both his team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-23 and Stewart’s No. 14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala. WGI Opening Day Tour Cancelled
Posted April 14, 2011 4:00PM
Due to Saturday’s current weather forecast of cold, wind, and rain, the club tour to Watkins Glen’s opening day has been cancelled. Proceeds from the track laps goes to a wonderful cause, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, so it would be great to support the event even though we’re not attending as a group. Please feel free to head down on your own and take laps on the track. They allow all motor vehicles (sedans, pickups, minivans, etc.) if you would rather not drive your Porsche in the lousy weather.

Points will be given for correct answers. The three highest scores will win first, second, and third prize. A tie breaker question will be used if needed.
The gimmick rally will start at the Terry Hills golf club in Batavia (same place we have our monthly meeting) to give both Buffalo and Rochester participants a central location to begin. Gimmick Rally & Picnic Details Finalized
Posted July 09, 2009 9:00PM
Saturday, July 18th, Babs and Tom Lyons will be running a gimmick rally. For those that have not done one before, the gimmick is we provide a route sheet with clues on it. As we drive the route “follow the leader” style, the driver and navigator use the clue sheet and try and find the items described and mark guesses on their answer sheet. Points are given for correct answers. The three highest scores will be given prizes from our Goodie Store.
The gimmick rally will start behind the Genesee Country Mall in Batavia to give both Buffalo and Rochester participants a central location to begin. The rally will end at Tony Frandina’s house (6808 Lake Shore Rd, Derby, NY, 14047, phone 716-849-1483) on Lake Erie in the town of Derby NY where we will partake in a picnic starting around 1:00pm.
Meeting time in Batavia will be 11:00am and departure will be at 11:30am.
Rob Dean will lead the Buffalo group from Autoplace Porsche to Batavia. Rob will be leaving Autoplace Porsche at 10:15am.
The picnic will be catered by a local vendor who is providing chicken breast and to be eaten on a roll. Baked beans, green salad, macaroni salad, chips, pretzels will be included. All paper products and utensils will be furnished. Ice will also be available.
Participants will need to bring their own drink and a folding chair or two. A TOPS market and liquor store are located close by for those that need to buy their supplies.
Anyone can participate in the rally but we will need an RSVP to participate in the picnic. A $5.00 or less charge will be levied on Picnic participants. RSVP to Tony Frandina or by phone at 716-849-1483 no later than Wednesday, July 15 at noon.
